Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is a chain and a necklace the same thing?

Necklaces are a type of jewellery worn around the neck, often featuring a non-detachable pendant suspended from a delicate chain.. Chains, on the other hand, are a specific type of necklace that consists solely of interconnected metal links, without any additional embellishments. While they can be worn with a pendant, chains are also frequently worn alone as a statement piece, showcasing their unique design and craftsmanship.

2. What are the types of chains?

When it comes to chains, there are many types to choose from. Here are some types of chains we have available:

  • Ball/Bead Chain: This delicate chain features a series of small, interconnected beads, creating a captivating and intricate design. Perfect for layering or adding a subtle touch of elegance to a pendant, this chain style is a versatile and stylish choice.
  • Box Chain: The box chain’s clean lines and smooth surface, formed by square links, make it a popular choice for both men and women and are extremely versatile. This is why individuals often pair them with our modern elegant white gold and rose gold designs.
  • Cable/Round Link Chain: This design consists of identical oval links connected to form a functional chain. It is a staple in jewellery for good reason – sturdy yet glittering, these chains are ideally paired with an elegant pendant, making them our top choice to pair with our exquisite gold designs.
  • Curb Link Chain: The curb link chain consists of interlocking flat links that gives it a bold and distinctive appearance. Available in various widths, this chain can be tailored to individual preferences. Heavier and chunkier curb link chains give a masculine touch and are favoured by men, while thinner curb chains would suit someone more feminine and delicate.
  • Wheat Chain: Drawing inspiration from the woven texture of wheat stalks, the wheat chain boasts exceptional durability and a classic, timeless appeal. Its intricate design makes it a striking statement piece when worn alone while it can be paired with a pendant for an elevated touch.
3. How do I choose the right chain length?

Choosing the right chain length for your gold chain necklace depends on your personal preference and body type. A good starting point is to measure your neck circumference with a soft measuring tape and add 5 to 10 cm to determine your minimum recommended chain length. For men, a common chain length is between 50 to 55 cm, which falls at the collarbone. For women, a popular length is between 40 to 45 cm, resting just above the neckline. However, these are just guidelines, and you should choose a chain length that you feel comfortable and confident wearing.

4. What factors determine the strength of a gold chain?

The strength of the chain depends on three things: type of link, thickness of the chain, and whether the links are independently soldered or not.

  • Curb Link Chain: This chain comes in soldered links and because it’s usually thick and heavy, it’s rare for them to break.
  • Wheat Chain: Because of their four-strand twisted oval links, wheat chains are durable at almost any thickness.
  • Cable/Round Link Chain: The cable chain’s continuous design without sharp bending points makes it well-suited for everyday wear. Its flexibility allows for creative styling options, such as twisting or knotting. While thinner cable chains are more delicate, they still offer an elegant and stylish option for those seeking a lightweight chain.
  • Box Chain: Box chains with thicker links are durable and hold a pendant excellently. If a link does break, it can be replaced without much difficulty.
  • Ball/Bead Chain: While this chain is visually interesting and makes for a great accessory, its intricate construction makes it more delicate. When it comes to durability, it does not compare as well to the other chain types. However, it doesn’t tangle easily, curbing breakage from entanglement.
5. What types of chain clasps are there?

Different chains require different clasps based on their material and weight. For our 999 gold chains, which tend to be heavier in design due to the softness of the metal, we use S-hooks. These clasps are robust enough to securely hold the chain’s end hoops in place. For our 10K, 14K, 18K, and 916 gold chains, we offer a variety of clasps, including S-hooks, lobster claws, and spring rings. The choice of clasp depends on the specific design and weight of the chain, with heavier chains requiring larger clasps for optimal security.

6. What is the best way to care for my gold chain?

To ensure the longevity of your gold chain, we recommend removing it before sleeping or showering. The softness of 999 and 916 gold makes them susceptible to damage during sleep, especially for chains with intricate designs. While 18K, 14K, and 10K gold chains are generally durable, extra care should be taken due to their higher gold content and softer nature. Exposure to water, soaps, and oils can also dull the chain’s lustre and compromise its integrity, regardless of the gold purity. Please refer to our gold jewellery guide for detailed care instructions.

7. Is there a warranty for SK Jewellery chains?

SK Jewellery offers a fuss free exchange period of 7 days. However, repairs may not be possible if the chain is broken or damaged due to wear and tear. In such cases, we may offer a trade-in option, particularly for 999 or 916 gold chains due to their delicate nature. We recommend bringing your chain to one of our retail stores for assessment and advice regarding repairs or trade-ins. For more information, you can refer to our exchanges and refunds policy.
