CARING FOR YOUR GOLD COLLECTIBLES
Most of the gold jewellery designs that you buy for everyday wear should undergo some level of regular cleaning or polishing in order to keep them in the most beautiful condition possible. However, our rectangular and square gold bars, coins, and other classic collectibles made from 999 Pure Gold typically do not require such extensive cleaning, if at all.
This is because the 99.9% purity of the gold keeps it tarnish-free. In fact, because 999 Gold is softer compared to gold of a smaller karat purity, it can actually be damaged by improper or rough cleaning. Typically, our gold bars are also kept within a thin foil of plastic to protect them from dust, dirt, and potential scratches. If you have a gold collectible at home that you wish to keep and pass down, it might even be best to simply leave it in its original packaging unless absolutely necessary.
If your gold collectibles do require some level of cleaning or repair, here are some steps you can take to avoid damaging them along the way:
- Always clean your hands to remove oil, dirt, and debris; this helps avoid transferring contaminants which can create tarnish.
- Wear soft cotton gloves to ensure no residue is left behind, while protecting your gold from fingerprints or blemishes.
- Only handle your gold with plastic tweezers or soft objects such as towels. Avoid metal instruments as they could scratch the gold.
- Use only specialised gold cleaners as other types of cleaners could tarnish the gold.
- Avoid handling if at all possible.
- Store your gold in a cool dry place away from both heat and humidity (especially in Singapore’s climate).
FAQS ABOUT GOLD BARS, COINS, AND COLLECTIBLES
The purity of gold is measured in karats. Because one karat is 1/24th of pure gold by weight, 24 karat gold would be pure gold without any other metals mixed in.
Lower karatage indicates a smaller gold percentage. For example, 18 karat gold would indicate a composition of 75 per cent gold and 25 per cent other metals. These other metals would usually be copper.
SK Jewellery offers an entire range of gold collectibles and jewellery in pristine quality ranging from 14K/18K gold diamond engagement rings to gold wedding bands to modern gold Si Dian Jin perfect for a timeless heirloom. If you’re looking to buy non-wearable gold, our array of classic gold bar and coin designs above are also suitable as a collectible or gift.
999 Gold refers to the purest form of gold, that has a gold content of 99.9%. It is otherwise known as 24K gold, mixed with only 0.1% other metals. SK Jewellery carries a wide range of jewellery and heirloom pieces made with 999 Gold including 999 Gold square bars, coins, rings, charms, bracelets, and chains.
916 Gold refers to gold with a gold content of 91.6%. It is otherwise known as 22K gold, mixed with 8.4% other metals. Traditionally, 916 Gold is great for making intricate jewellery rather than solid gold bars or coins as its alloy content allows it to be more durable. Discover an extensive variety of 916 Gold jewellery suitable for everyday wear at our boutiques in Singapore including bracelets, pendants, earrings, charms, and necklaces.
This would largely depend on the occasion and intention of your purchase, and how often you would like to wear it.
999 Gold is the best choice for retention of value, making it ideal for collectibles. As a gift, it conveys the purest of blessings. However, due to having less alloys mixed in, 999 Gold is softer. As such, jewellery designs made of 999 Gold tend to be more traditional and matte, and it is not suitable for everyday wear as it dents easily. It is best for occasion-only pieces of jewellery, or as collectible gifts such as bars and coins meant for display rather than constant handling.
While the value of 916 Gold is not as high as 999 Gold, it is still capable of retaining value with only 8.3% less gold purity. Due to the other metals it’s mixed with, it is more durable than 999 Gold, making it capable of being crafted into intricate and exquisite designs. It has much better wearability for everyday and more contemporary designs, making it easier to match one’s everyday style. For true everyday wearability, we also offer a variety of 10K/14K/18K/24K gold jewellery including 24 karat gold pendants and necklaces, gold bracelets, gold bangles, and gold earrings.
